Messrs. Dorman & Smith

Dorman and Smith

Founded in the 1880s, for a while was quite a large company specializing in electrical switchgear installations (though "large" is quite subjective when it comes to a new industry), Titanics switchgear which was "arranged on somewhat novel lines" was made by D&S.

Dorman and Smith were later involved in the plug socket wars of Post-WWII Britain where they competed with MK in the development of a fused, switch, three pin plug, in the end D&S was never able to supply enough plugs and sockets because britain was still recovering from WWII, and the MK type won out, supposedly some london council houses had dorman and smith plugs into the 1970s, but they were soon replaced with MK type plug sockets.

The D&S plug socket featured round pins and the live pin was a screw in fuse, which did lead to quite a dangerous flaw, sometimes the fuse stayed in the socket!
